Kanzashi is hair ornament used in traditional Japanese hairstyles. It may date back to the Jomon period (13000 – 300 BC) when the ancient Japanese believed that wearing a thin stick in their hair could defend against evil spirits.
During the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568 – 1603), the hairstyles of Japanese women transformed from the taregami (long straight hair) to the wider variety of nihongami (Japanese hair) which made frequent use of kanzashi.
Kanzashi came into peak use in the Edo period (1603 – 1868), when Japanese women’s hairstyles became more complicated, using a considerable number of ornaments. Moreover, many known styles of kanzashi were created during the later part of this era.
Today, kanzashi is still popular among young ladies although it is usually worn in Japan by brides, professional kimono wearers, or adepts of sado and ikebana.
